A BURST OF LIFE

Welcome back, flick folks! Licorice Pizza, this is the movie we’re going to start the new Movie Experience season with. Alana, a young woman trapped in a male-chauvinist and cynical world is attracted to fresh, vital and honest-to-goodness Gary, a ten years younger boy whose entrepreneurial spirit and knack for business make him look much more sound and dependable than the parodic, surreal and unfinished men that she dates.

Named after the record store chain popular on the US West Coast in the Seventies, the film comes with a soundtrack that scores high, from Bowie to the Doors, from McCartney to The Wings, Bing Crosby, Nina Simone and others. Music voices Alana and Gary’s yearning for love (and life), and echoes in their relentless running: one toward the other, one away from the other or one after the other, side by side or rolling in circle, like balls in a pinball machine, or magnets, like a pair of compasses, or licorice stuck to the roof of a mouth. The idea that love makes the world go round is not a cliché to director and screenwriter Anderson.
